Darkness in Light: Three Gothic Tales
Delve into a realm between knowledge and imagination, between certainty and superstition with this trio of mysterious tales, all with a Yorkshire connection. Drawn from writings spanning half-a- millennium, this semi-promenade performance in an historic church blends live action with multi-media. The stories contrast pious medieval belief in the netherworld with more recent scepticism and a spirit of enquiry into strange phenomena.
‘Folios from a Monk’s Ghost Book’ adapts text from a manuscript of 1400 from Byland Abbey; ‘Gothic Imaginings’ are taken from the writings of sensationalist Regency author Matthew Lewis; and ‘The Haunting of Holy Trinity’ looks at the celebrated apparitions at Holy Trinity Church, Micklegate in York which were investigated by the Rev Sabine Baring-Gould in the 1870s.
