Visiting the Royal Ballet and Opera’s Aberdare Hub

On 26 November 2025, ReStage and Get Set Cymru met with the Royal Ballet and Opera (RBO) team at their production and logistics hub in Aberdare. Established in 1995, this site manages thousands of sets and costumes, operating as a global logistics centre for Covent Garden. Witnessing this facility in action—specifically its bespoke racking, lifting systems, and dedicated lorry fleet—offered a masterclass in methodical, large-scale storage. Aimee Parker from Get Set Cymru and the ReStage team spent the day studying how these integrated systems sustain a high-volume circular economy for the performing arts.

The sheer scale of the RBO's operations has directly shaped our thinking on the "Mega Hub" concept. Seeing 30 years of logistical expertise in a single location reinforces the ReStage vision for consolidated resource activities that can serve an entire region. We are now exploring how Get Set Cymru can collaborate with the RBO to redistribute materials to local community groups. By aligning the RBO's commitment to circulation with regional networks, we can ensure that professional-grade resources continue to support the creative sector long after they leave the main stage.

Key takeaways from the Aberdare visit:

  • Mega Hub Inspiration: Using the RBO’s significant footprint as a blueprint for future creative sector "Mega Hubs".

  • Logistical Integration: Observing how site-specific racking and specialised transport enable efficient material flow.

  • Community Impact: Developing routes to move surplus materials from national institutions to local community practitioners.
